Blackheath Village Highway Works

If you would like more information on how the highways scheme being implemented in Blackheath Village will affect vehicle access to the village during the time the work is going on the Council have produced a comprehensive booklet.

The works started on 11 July and are schedualed to finish on 12 September.  For most of the period it will be possible to drive through the village, but there will be restrictions on entry and exit points for most of the period.  Between 1 August and 22 August there will be no route through from north to south as this is when the work on the traffic island will be taking place.

Lewisham Handyperson Service

I've received an invitation to the relaunch of the Lewisham Handyperson Service next week, unfortunately it's during the day so I won't be able to make it.  However, I thought I'd give it a plug.

It's a free service (except for materials) for older, disabled and vulnerable people living within the borough and they'll do small repairs and adaptions to help people continue living at home, safe and independent.  Each job they do is limited to 2 hours.

If you think this might be a service you or someone you know might find useful then please call 020 8314 6309 or email handyperson@lewisham.gov.uk.

Hannah Baneth

Bob pays tribute to Hannah Baneth.

I knew Hannah a little through her work as a Streetleader in the
borough and will remember her with affection (even if there was always
some trepidation as you saw her bearing down on you to ask what was
always a tricky question).  As I'm sure will many others from
across the borough and beyond.

Why the Tories Lost the General Election

Lord Saatchi blames himself,
where as I thought it was Noel Gallagher's reminder that tipped the
balance.

I don't have a clue if his analysis is right (and given
that he admits to getting so much wrong there's a strong chance he's
wrong on this as well), but it is wittily put.

London in Bloom

On Tuesday the London in Bloom judges came to Lewisham.  This is a competition between boroughs based on four judging criteria; horticultural excellence, sustainability, looking after the general environment, and involving the community.

Our bid this year has been strengthened by the level of community involvement there has been.  And I'd like to thank everyone for their commitment; from those who have taken part in green gym events, allotmentiers, the amenity societies, community groups and many more.  We also had fantastic support from the Horniman museum, the NDC, Phoebe's and Glendale.

We'll have to wait to see how we fare against all the other London boroughs until the end of September when the results are announced.  However, the initial feedback is encouraging.  One of the judges said to me that ours was the 'Olympic' bid (lets hope London rather than Moscow) and when asked whether the presentation and the reality matched said they thought they had.

For those who are wondering last year we got a Silver Award at the London in Bloom awards.
